I spent several hours last night at a little French cafe in San Francisco with a bunch of bloggers and techie people. Met a guy named George Kelly, who, it turns out, works on the copy desk at the Contra Costa Times, so he’s next on my to-do list for inclusion in the editors’ blogs list.
Also met J.D. Lasica of New Media Musings fame, and sat behind the legendary Craig Newmark of Craig’s List. J.D.’s charming co-host for the evening was Susan Mernit, a techie/consultant who lives down in San Jose. Dan Gillmor also put in an appearance.
I had the, uh, fortune to be sitting right across from George so he got me in a bunch of his pictures. Lots of great conversations overheard, everybody was smart and interesting. Note to self: if you want to sound smart in a roomful of way smarter people, stay away from the red wines.
Funny scene: A friend of Susan’s (both used to work for AOL) named Heather sits next to me. Heather’s young, cute, smart and loves to gab, and I look over and see she’s holding forth and about six geeky-looking young blogger guys are hanging on her every word. It just seemed like one of those classic Silicon Valley moments you imagine, where the one woman who can talk tech with the guys instantly becomes the center of attention because, well, the ratio of guys to gals is about six-to-one. Heather also rides a motorcycle, which is cool by definition.
And, of course, being an American pig by nature, I couldn’t help enjoying being in a setting where the French waiters were required to speak English.
