Finally confirmed by the fact that J.D., co-host of the blogger dinner the other night, invited me to join Orkut, a “social networking” site now owned by Google. The site’s in beta now, which means at any given time it won’t work for crap. Well, like the time when I tried to join up this morning and the server failed every time I tried to establish my account. This had the amusing trait of telling me my user name had already been taken, asking me to try another user name, server failing again, and then despite the server having failed, Okrut tells me the username I just tried now is already taken. I tried this with a half-dozen user names, including strings of nonsense characters that could not possibly be taken, and no dice. So, no donut for me, as the error message goes.
Probably a kind way of saying Okrut’s gotten too popular for its own good. Or some sneaky trick the cool kids are playing on me, like they used to do back in the seventh grade. Well, I had my revenge: they married cheerleaders who got fat and bitchy and I became a blogger regarded as sane in some circles.
As for Orkut, I guess I’ll try back tomorrow.
UPDATE: Well, I got the damn thing to work now. Next up: what to do with it. Will report back later.
