Rick at Best Hike linked to this video starring Casey Anderson, who’s been raising Brutus the grizzly for six years. The pic above is a screen grab from the video, which, among other things, features Brutus as the best man at his wedding. Wonder what his bride thought (or, better yet, her Maid of Honor?)
OK, so he’s a wildlife biologist who knows what he’s doing, but the idea of knocking about with an 800-pound hiking buddy capable of biting someone’s head off brings out my inner worrywart.
Saw Grizzly Man; sad, sad movie. Hey, I love nature and wildlife, but I respect (okay, fear) them like it’s nobody’s business. I’ve learned from Grizzly Man, that chimp that bit that woman’s face off, and from the Siegfried and Roy tiger attack. Hey, be safe out there. 🙂
I understand what you’re saying here. I personally would never want to mess around with grizzly bears, especially one this huge. But this really isn’t a comparison to Grizzly Man (Timothy Treadwell). TT was living amoungst totally wild bears in a totally wild environment, and was doing so at the most dangerous time, when they were having trouble finding natural food. Plus, I’m not convinced that he really knew what he was doing. He kind of wasn’t all there. Casy Anderson has actually raised this bear from a cub as a rescued animal, although I don’t know the whole story. In one of his TV shows, he is shown trying to teach this bear how to catch fish in a man made water feature designed to mimick a wild river. I wouldn’t be doing this, but I have never experiences a bond like that.
