Fortunately a few of our colleagues have not shirked their important blogging duties in a vain quest to earn $.0005 an hour from large Internet retailers. Among the highlights:
- Jane Huber of BAHiker.com notes that more trails may open at the La Honda Open Space Preserve (great news because there are so few trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains). Those schooled in the history of the Bay Area know that La Honda is where Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters once frolicked back before LSD was illegal (this is why the gray-bearded hippies insist things were so much cooler when they were kids).
- Dave Miller of Bay Area Outdoors and Beyond stopped in on Coast Camp at Point Reyes National Seashore, where he’s planning take some impressionable youth backpacking. His pictures are excellent.
- Calipidder went backpacking along the Redbud Trail at Cache Creek Wilderness. This is a great place to take your dog backpacking, and it includes a swimming hole.
- Outside San Diego is giving away six free stainless steel water bottles.
- Roy the Camping Blogger shows how to practice camping in your back yard.
- Tom Clifton helped clean up the Coyote Creek.
- Rick the Half Dome Hiker again rubs our faces in the fact that he’s latched onto cool cruise ship gigs (and tells how to do stair laps on an ocean liner to prepare for crucial Dome ascents; good to know!). Speaking of Half Dome: The cables are up, if you didn’t know already. Finally, as long as I’m on the subject: My first-ever Amazon sale was Rick’s book (I suspect Winehiker Russ was my first customer; he’s planning to lead a tour to the top soon).
- Uncooped.com posts the redneck’s video guide to camping. (OK, so it trots out the required good-ol-boy stereotypes; you’ll be fine as long as you have no redneck friends).
- Shoulda posted this last week except I was on vacation: Gambolin’ Man’s guide to great parks in the Oakland hills..
OK, those oughta keep you clicking for awhile. I’m always grateful when others write about their hikes — it’s like having a whole weekend free.
