Who’d a thunk there was so much to say about hiking?
Lately it occurs to me there still is not a be-all and end-all site for hikers, no Facebook for dirtwalkers. There are sites about gear, sites for talking about gear, sites about specific locales, sites about specific national scenic trails, sites about writing about hiking the national scenic trails. A few absurd souls like me write about our hikes whether anybody wants to be told or not.
But there’s still no site that brings it all together under one roof. I think any such site has to answer four questions:
- Where do I go?
- What do I take?
- Who do I go with (if anybody)?
- Who’s been there before?
It also would have to get over distinguishing between day-hikers and backpackers. There’s nothing special about sleeping on the ground, but there’s nothing to fear there either. If you hike and camp, you’re OK by me.
What do the rest of you think? (Beyond the obvious fact that I couldn’t think of anything else to write about today?)
CONGRATS, Tom.
The future uber site is “Networking” people with common interests.
Facebook is the most successful at that, so far.
But I want CORE CONTENT of quality. With networking an opt-in add on feature.
Perhaps a hiking Wiki. With opt-in RSS feed on each chunk of content.
I like that you think there should be no distinction between day hikers and over nighters. I really do not care we are all hikers. I love taking long hikes, preferably several months at a time. It always annoys me that the thru hikers think they are some how more special than me.I like to ask them why. Many will tell me “you will understand when you do a thru hike” Of course I do not tell them that I have thru hiked both the AT and PCT until after I ask the question. I never felt I was more special on my thru hikes than the section or day hikers. We are hikers.
I am going to head to the Appalachian Trail In PA soon. Looking forward to putzing around the trail for a few months.
Keep up the good work Tom. You have the best hiking blog out there!
IMHO, summitpost (http://www.summitpost.com) still has one of the best models for user-generated content going.
They were a wiki long before the term wiki was generated.
Its obviouly a climbing/scrambling site, but every climb/scramble has (or is, for summit trails) an approach hike.
I’m thinking a “summit post meets seeking alpha” for hiking that combines discussions with gear reviews and the best blog posts could be a pretty cool site.
Though the fact that one has not been created at this late date suggests perhaps the interest isn’t there.
Actually we do have such a site. It’s called Google. However, it is like all the other big sites such as trails.com. It takes a lot of clicks to get focused on what you really want to know. One of the best sites is the Backpacker Magazine forums, as they have about a dozen different forums that cover the spectrum of what, who, where. I very seldom go there, though, because it is signon, multiple clicks, and then browse. I’ve got a limited amount of time, and the email forums that I get in digest form, and the blogs I read thru Google Reader are all I’ve got time for. The blogs in particular are very focused on my interests. I don’t have to click much, just read.
Ralph, that is a good point. Sometimes I’m not sure if people come here for my hiking tips or if they just like to read my ramblings. Probably some combination of the two.
Have you check out hikersjournal? This is basically a facebook for hikers. It has grouops that can be started, networking, photography ideas, and even places to leave blog articles on. I found it a while back and enjoy using it. Hope this helps.
I took a look around there… interesting but I wish there was a way to import my blog postings into it.
Some of us live vicariously through you, Tom. Ramble on!
