Somebody jogged my recollection of hiking through an olive grove at Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park, which used to be somebody’s ranch till it got donated to the local regional parks district. A century-old stand of olive groves — still bearing fruit when I hiked there in October 2006 — remains at the park.
Here’s a picture of it.
Seems like I’ve hiked through all sorts of old orchards over the years but of course none spring to mind at the moment. So, what of it, folks, do you recall any? I’ll dig through my old posts and see what else I can come up with.
The one at Pleasanton ridge really stands out but since I was just on the Ohlone trail I can actually remember this, there is an old pear orchard near Johnnys pond.
Oh and BTW the fall display around goat rock is nearing its peak, probably this week will be the best show (its not much but always a nice treat for the bay area)
Monte Bello Open Space has at least one old orchard. Start at the parking lot across from Los Trancos and head down the Canyon Trail (towards the Black Mountain Trail Camp). You walk past it in the first quarter mile or so.
Welcome back and get well.
On the Clyma Trail at Morgan Territory is an old stand of either almond or pecan trees. They’re not in very good shape, but can be seen from the road if looking carefully.
Sycamore Grove in Livermore also has some nice orchards in which to hang out on a hot day. Stay on the paved trail, they’re about 2 miles from the Wetmore Rd. staging area.
The Monte Bello orchard is walnut.
There are a bunch in the bay area — one of my favorites is an old pear orchard at Devil’s Gulch/Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
Was at Picchetti Ranch OSP the other day and there was an old orchard there.
Not much of a hike though, but nice views and there is a winery.
There are some orchards along the BART between Long Ridge and Russian Ridge. There’s lots of apple blossoms along there during spring.
