4WheelBob mentioned this in a comment the other day: he’s joining some of his pals from Backpacker magazine’s forum for a weekend at Carrizo Plan National Monument in Southern California. They’re going this coming Friday to Sunday. I’ve decided to check it out myself.
The wildflowers are often spectacular down there in the springtime, but even if they aren’t, it’s miles and miles of open wilderness and free (though dry) camping. The plan is to hang out at a place called Selby Campground. There aren’t many actual trails, so there may be a lot of bushwhacking happening.

If anybody feels like playing hooky on Friday and heading down, let me know. I can fit a couple folks in the Hiker Hauler.
I am interested. I don’t think that I have ever been there (though may have, on a trip down to my fathers field area in the Cuyama Valley back in 1965). I need to check my schedule and if I can handle two weekends away.
Tiny, tiny chance I could meet you there.
How many days will people be there?
Just the weekend?
Rick: Yeah, just the weekend. I have to be back at work the following Tuesday. We could reconvene the Mustache Mafia — Bob’s two pals from Bishop are planning to come too.
Tom: let me know how things work out.
It’s always a tough decision for me between desert trips and snow trips at this time of the year. But for this particular weekend, taking advantage of the big snow year has won out.
I drove through the Carizo Valley area perhaps 10 years ago or so. It’s like the mini-Death Valley that few people know about. Pretty amazing place.
I am going to have pass on this trip.
