I’ve noticed that all the cool kids are adding Google maps mash-ups of their outings — an option available to them because they aren’t otherwise busy keeping their neighbors apprised of all the nifty nearby hiking opportunities five days a week like some (well, me) of the more unhinged inhabitants of the blogosphere. Dylan Kuhn, AKA Cyberhobo, built a WordPress plug-in enabling this mischief. I was in the clear till I switched to WordPress a few months back. Now I’m out of excuses, save one: mapping everyplace I’ve hiked in the past three years would take another three years, because the plug-in works by adding a location to each post, which means editing each post and entering the location data manually. Count every weekend going back to the summer of 2004 and you can see how this adds up.
This link shows what I have so far.
If you’ll excuse me now, I have some mapping to do.
Those mashups are fun. I found one a while ago for Gallery2 (the OS photo management software on my site) and have had a lot of fun with it.

Your map is coming along nicely. It’s like a massive undertaking, I’m sure, but once you’re finished, it will be an invaluable resource. Now I’m curious to find out if an equivalent mash-up/plug-in exists for Movable Type users.
Cyberhobo’s geo-mashup is an excellent little plugin. Dylan’s done a great job with the coding, and it’s fascinating to see what people are doing with it … just be careful when you upgrade WordPress. Although apparently I’m in the minority, I’ve had problems trying to get them to play nice every time I’ve ever updated software, and had to resort to the more hands-on approach of Google Maps built-in customizing.
I love this plugin and so do the readers of my blog. I’ve made it the header to my template so it always shows where we are during our travels. Dylan is working hard on a big release with a lot of requested features. This isn’t anything like using using the Google Maps API directly. One feature that’s been rumored to be in the next release is the ability to show only the posts of the articles you are viewing (Archives, searches etc…)
Definitely check it out if your blogs have any use for geotagging. As far as problems with upgrades, I had one a while back but it was when I upgraded the plugin. I was new to wordpress so it’s very likely I did something wrong as no ones else posted about similar problems.
