The first was last year at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. Given that the earthy rodent’s day in the sun (or shadow) is fast approaching, it’s time to think about where this one will be.
I already have a hiking date for Saturday, Feb. 2 (I’m a special guest on a Bay Area Linkup hike at Big Basin — I’m pretty sure permission from Schwarzenegger himself had to be secured to allow this deviation from protocol), but I’m free on Sunday, Feb. 3, so that’s my date for the Invitational.
Any of you who have that day open are invited to come along (I had to say that to justify calling it an invitational).
Yeah, but where?
I think it has to be Henry Coe, in honor of the park’s threatened status. We can work out the rest on the fly, I suppose, but be thinking about a mid-morning start (say, 10 a.m.) and a mid-afternoon finish (say 2 p.m.).

Great blog! I just returned from California and a great hike at Andrew Mollera SP near Big Sur. Looking forward to reading more about your very important parks out there!
I would come to the Groundhog Invitational but I won’t be here. I’m going to Death Valley for that first full week in February, leaving 2 weeks from tomorrow and I can’t wait! I did hike Henry Coe today, the Hunting Hollow entrance again and took the Lyman-Willson trail up to the top. And I saw what has to be the biggest bobcat of my life about halfway up, just sitting a short distance from the trail. It was so big that at first I wondered if it was a mountain lion. But then it got up and walked away and it was clear it was a bobcat. Another hiker told me the thing hangs out around the Lyman-Willson trail a lot so if you hike it, keep your eyes open. You might get to see it!
Tom, another hike I can’t go on. I’m doing the Kaiser 5K walk/run in SF. It’s also Superbowl Sun for all football fans– just so you know.
Crud: I forgot all about the Super Bowl. Hmm…
Tom, I’m here to write that a) I’m very jealous that Cynthia is going to Death Valley for two weeks, and b) I do plan to join y’all for this hike.
Dan
Actually I’m jealous too cause I am only going to be there for one week. Two weeks would be heaven! I am going there for a photography workshop though and I won’t have much opportunity to hike. I’ll have to save that for another trip. I am going one day early to do at least one hike. I’m planning to hike up to the top of the Keane Wonder Mine. Other than that I will be behind my camera learning to take better pictures. The other reason to be jealous though is that we will not be going out to the Race Track and I swear, Dan has the best B&W picture taken there that I think I have ever seen!
OK, we have Dan Mitchell down. Who’s next? (I know 4WheelBob, the consummate sports fan, may need the whole day off for the Super Bowl).
I just got back from my first hike in Coe, and am ready ready to go again. So count me in. I’ll tivo the superbowl.
We may still be able to get back in time for the game.
Wondering about car-pool plans. I can take my aging 4runner, but we may have to hike a few extra miles and plant a few trees for carbon offsets.
