I’ve alluded to this in previous posts but this one will be the general summation: 4WheelBob thinks he can wheel himself to the summit of White Mountain in the Eastern Sierra near Big Pine, CA. I’m going to tag along and document the experience here when we get back.
It turns out that Rick McCharles of Best Hike blog fame had to be in San Jose this week for a big gymnastics tournament but will be free next week, so he’s going with me on Monday. We’ll be car camping at the Grandview Campground near the Ancient Bristlecone Pine forest till Wednesday morning, when we head up to the approach to White Mountain. Bob has a pass to park at the Barcroft Lab, six miles — and about 1,800 feet of climb — from the summit. He’s planning on camping on the mountain, summiting and returning on Thursday (he can go much much faster downhill).
Chances are, Rick and I will do the same. On Friday, Rick’s going to head to Yosemite and hike half of the John Muir Trail. I’ll probably head back to the Bay Area then.
So, needless to say, no posts next week, but plenty of fun the week after.
.. And I want to wish Bob all the best and complete success in making this summit. Go Bob!
It was good to receive a call from Rick last night, Tom. The man sure is ambitious! I sure do wish you, Rick, and especially 4WheelBob a safe and successful summit! You’re really going to marvel at the Bighorns, the Bristlecones, and that 300-mile view.
