I’d like to get a Trail Angel outing together for folks thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Most of the crowd is in the High Sierra north of Kennedy Meadows and should start trickling into Yosemite around the Fourth of July.
Around a week after that they ought to start hitting Sonora Pass, which is where I’d like to set up an angel station. Heres’ what the Pass looked like last year:
So even if I never saw a hiker all day I could at least hang out in a stunning setting. As I recall there’s a Forest Service campground down the road for overnighting it if necessary.
My current thought is to try this the weekend of July 14-15.
If you’re interested in coming along, drop me a note at twoheeldrive@gmail.com
Tom, that’s a neighborhood I frequent in July / August anyway. I’d be pleased to meet up with you and other potential Trail Angels that weekend.
OK, that’s one!
My hunch is most of “the herd” will have passed through by the 14th … last year’s fastest hikers were here on the July 4 and that was with considerable deep snow along the John Muir Trail.
Could try earlier, but July 4 is a Thursday and lots of folks will be taking a four-day weekend so the area around Sonoma might be a bit busy, whereas the following weekend should be a bit calmer.
I’m hoping the skeeters won’t be too bad at the pass … it’s pretty far from any standing water.
I see that Crow’s in Mammoth Lakes already… barely 100 miles from Sonora; she’ll be long past by the 14th-15th.
She was just behind “the herd” at last report & looks like she’s passed ’em up.
Maybe we should move the location further north.
If you move it, just let me know. I’ll keep the weekend open.
