Great writing Tom! I wish I had your talent both for writing and hiking. I hope you will post links here for all of your SJ Mercury articles, as I want to read them (I
The Bay Area hiking community has been lacking this kind of resource for too long. Heck, it might make me consider subscribing to the Merc again!
Better than a “good” first effort. It’s just the ticket! Good strategy, too….sucker ’em in with nice, pleasant Coyote Hills, then WHAM! – It’s COE TIME!
I just found it in my paper on page 39 of the Entertainment Guide and it comes with a picture! A benefit of subscribing I guess and I’ll keep my subscription just for this! And the article is so well laid out. Everything you need to know about the park is there. Great job. And Coe has to be next! You could do a whole series on Coe. Man, I can’t wait for my leg to heal up so I can get back there myself!
Thanks folks… the column will run twice a month in the Eye section. Next one, for May 3,is at Sunol.
Haven’t made up my mind for the next one after that but Henry Coe does sound like a definite maybe … after all there’s only about six weeks of non-sweltering hiking there after that, and wildflowers are pretty nice in mid-May.
Ahh, a good point. You wouldn’t want to entice inexperienced and unsuspecting hikers into tackling Coe in the summer heat. And in the meantime I still have not been to Sunol. I’ll sure be looking for that May 3rd article! I’m betting it will be just the thing to get me there.
Tom – congratulations! Mighty impressive! Could lead to big things! It’s already a big thing! I hope you get lots of great feedback from your readers! Stienstra – the other Tom – watch out!!

It’s good to see your byline on the Merc, Tom. I wish you whole rucksacks full o’ success with your new column.
