Somebody at Whiteblaze.net posted a link to a Reno movie writer’s piece about who would be the ideal person to adapt a movie version of Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” into a blockbuster film. Among the suggestions: Steve Oedekerk (who?), Cameron Crowe (maybe), David Mamet (now you’re talkin’).
Last I heard, Robert Redford wanted to get together with Paul Newman for one last buddy pic, and “Into the Woods” was a possibility. A movie blog back in February said Chris Columbus had been chosen to direct, but I can’t find any more confirmation.
Any of my Hollywood hiking pals have any more insight on this?
I haven’t heard this before, but that book certainly has some great movie potential. The Columbus-as-director thing looks like a recent rumor, but if this movie does end up happening, I sure hope they get someone a bit ‘edgier’ to direct — to reluctantly use a media buzzword. I don’t trust Chris Columbus with anything above watered-down slapstick.
I haven’t seen anything about a writer attached, either … I’d hope Bryson would at least take a crack at the script, even if someone else ends up taking the reins.
I’m just sayin’ … I’m available … and I’ve been looking for a way to write-off hiking the AT 😉
For those unaware, Casey writes for a cable TV show in Tinseltown.
Such is life, a job like that could probably get you lots of chicks in just about any other town on earth.
Wow, a “Walk in the Woods” movie would just about make my year. I had heard rumors about this, but I wrote them off as hollywood-development chatter—I never expected it to get beyond the discussion phase.
While we’re talking about it, I’d like to officially offer up my services as screenwriter for the movie. Heck, why not? I’m a screenwriter, I write a hiking blog (though sporadically, I must admit), and I’ve read each of Bill Bryson’s books at least twice (I’m not kidding).
Hollywood, give me a call. 🙂
