Tom,
This is an area of the UK known as South Shropshire and forms part of the Welsh Marches, beautiful border country between England and Wales. I live due East of here and these hills are the first that you get to when travelling west.
Beyond these hills is a magical, mystical, celtic land of song and myths. There are a couple of great long distance footpaths here. Ofar’s Dyke follows the border between England and Wales from South to North and remembers King Ofar and the border fortification that he built between the two. A wonderful walk.
The second walk – Glyndowr’s Way – starts at the borders and explores mid- Wales before arcing back to the border. Owain Glyndowr was the last ‘Prince’ of Wales to rise up against the English, setting up an independent Parliament in the tiny town of Machynlleth. He was in effect a guerilla leader operating in the fourteenth & fifteenth centuries. Perhaps you can tell I am of Welsh descent.
Anyone visiting the UK could do worse than spend some time here. There are wonderful towns and villages, it’s never too busy and the landscape is gorgeous ..
.. and there just might be a pot of something at the end of that rainbow!
Andy: Thanks much, I knew I could count on you.
