Gambolin Man, who hails from Berkeley, sent the following on Monday:
Same day you were on the Mountain, I was hiking her unheralded sister ridges at Las Trampas — have you ever been there? I am in awe every time I go there. There are two ridge hikes (running east to west, or is that west to east?) that are superb – an elevated landscape with faraway 360 views (I could see Mt. St. Helena!), Tuyshtak dominating ever so close (even though a 10 mile wide valley separates!), a roller coastery classic ridge hike along a mega-spine of tortured uplift – nice big rock formations, pretty zen sandstone gardens, fragrant black sage, up at the crests. And once up – this is tough, rugged country — it’s truly like being in an island in the sky.
(Downsides? Well, the usual suspects, especially car noise from the 680 below (Alamo, Danville side) But it’s not ever-present, and at times it just sounds like a roaring river. People stay away because of that, as well as cows graze there (didn’t see any on entire hike); it’s horsemen country (didn’t encounter a single horseman) – other than that, what downside, for cryin’ out loud???!!!) (Side note: the other ridge, Rocky Ridge, rises to over 2000 ft, and descends into intriguing and very remote / rugged EBMUD lands to Devil’s Hole, Ramage Peak, etc. . .only occasional air traffic this ridge.)
This hike sounds promising, though the Gamboleer tends to make all his hikes sound that way. He suggests a weekend day in February. Any takers? Gambolin’ Man’s last Las Trampas hike write-up is here. I’ve never been there so I figure it’s worth a look.
Bay Area Hiker write-up here.
I spent an afternoon hiking in Las Trampas a couple of days after Christmas. I had a specific hike in mind when I went there but encountered trails so muddy (and I mean muddy!) that I canned my original idea and ad-libbed some shorter hikes there instead that still kept me busy. Besides hiking a section of the Chamise Trail, I hiked up the paved Rocky Ridge View Trail to the top of Rocky Ridge and then looped back down on the Questa Trail. The views up on top of Rocky Ridge were expansive and gorgeous in all directions and made the effort worth it. My own little write up and pictures are here: http://web.mac.com/cynthial1952/iWeb/Site/LasTrampas27Dec2006.html
Even though I didn’t do the hike I wanted, I saw enough that I do plan to go back and explore the park again when the trails are dry.
The trails down the road from me are much the same … they take at least three or four days for the mud to become passable.
Maybe we’ll just have to wait for a week where there’s not been any rain and make an executive decision on Thursday or Friday to go for it.
Hello Tom,
I invite you to check out my flickr East Bay set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lj0913/sets/72157594382029659/ sorted from oldest to newest. Bottom images are from Las Trampas hike.
I hiked for the first in Las Trampas Nov 18th, and enjoyed it. This was my first hike out there so I didn’t have any hike in mind. I hiked up Rocky Ridge enjoyed the sights, had lunch, and hiked down and did the Creek Loop where I encountered a very laid-back Califorina Newt. I’d love to explore more of Las Trampas, and I would be interesting in joining you, and others on this hike.
Great site, I came accorss it last night, and I’ve enjoyed it emensely. Your writing reflects one of my favorite authors:Bill Bryson.
Best,
-Larry
February hike? I could be tempted.
Dan
Feb. 3 it is, fellow gamboleers! More to come on trail we’ll be hiking, as well as where to park.
