As promised, Russ at Trailcraft offers three good ways to make camping coffee. His fave:
Turkish Coffee. This little blessing from heaven was introduced to me just a few years ago and I have enjoyed it on almost every trip since. Turkish Coffee is very strong and extremely finely ground Colombian coffee. The advantage of this stuff is that you can make cowboy coffee with it without the problem of grounds in your teeth. It is so strong that it can be almost undrinkable. Unless you buy the right stuff.
He offers a recipe for making this stuff drinkable that includes what looks to be about two parts sugar (no Splenda!) for every three parts coffee. I’ll take his word for it but I’ll be sticking with my Swiss Miss.
I’m a big coffe fan, but when a friend introduced me to some dark sludge and called it Turkish coffee a couple of years ago, I couldn’t stand it. I remember not being particularly polite about it. It stands out in my head as one of those drinks I never want to try again, like southern comfort or ouzo.
