Rick of Best Hikes has been racking up a ton of great posts of late. To wit:
- The World’s Most Dangerous Tourist Route
- Fast vs. slow hiking in a group.
- Paria, the best canyon hike in the world.
- Hiking the Wave.
Rick’s life is essentially a collection of now-and-again odd jobs (he recruits Cirque du Soleil acrobats, among other things) that pay for his now-and-again world travels. In a Douglas Adams book he’d be a researcher for the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Let’s see, what else. Oh, yeah:
Scoutmaster recommends essential books of knots. (I think there should be a blog devoted only to knots — think of the money you could make catering to the bondage crowd).
OGE Outdoor Blog notes a big 30 percent off North Face clearance sale.
Sports Geezer reports that one gym is instituting a no-grunting policy.
Parents magazine offers tips on taking your kids on a nature walk.
A nature walk also gives kids a wonderful opportunity to sharpen their senses. Have your child up his ears and ask him to mimic what he hears, such as birds calling or the wind blowing.
I’m dead certain you will never live to regret such advice, certainly not when said child recites said noises until over and over till you want to do that Homer-Grabs-Bart’s-Throat thing.
The Colorado plateau is perhaps the best hiking destination in the world (as you know from your summer trip there).
I love that desert scenery. And you can hike somewhere there year round, like California.

Hey! What about italian alps?
