This is way, way cool: Gmap-Pedometer.com. It uses Google Maps to calculate how far you’ve walked and how many calories you’ve burned. The distance tool is reasonably accurate given that the only way to create points on your route is to double-click on a map or a satellite image so you’ll never get a true step-by-step distance. It’s not off by much, though: I checked a route I’ve hiked dozens of times and it was accurate within a tenth of a mile after four miles.

The calorie counter is more iffy because it relies primarily on body weight. It doesn’t factor in speed, fitness level or elevation gain, so it’s a broad-side-of-the-barn estimate.

On the whole, though, it seems like a handy link to have around.
