I had a California reader requesting tips for winter trails and camping along the West Coast.
Not having near as much expertise in these regards as the rest of y’all, I figured I’d toss this one out to everybody and see what you come up with.
I’m guessing the request is for snowshoeing rather than skiing, and from a beginner rather than a veteran.
Seems to me the area around Lake Tahoe, one of the snowiest locales on the planet, would be ideal, but that covers a lot of mountains.
Any and all ideas welcome.
Hi,
I agree with you. Lake Tahoe would be just perfect for any kind of snow sports. Besides there area also numerous resorts.
Thanks.
Trails abound. Good starting places are Yosemite (Badger Pass Ski area and Glacier Point road are easy, safe places to try out snow camping, and there are lots of other good trails and places to snow camp in the park). Ditto Lassen, Shasta, SEKI, Carson Pass, and many spots off of I80, I50 and the west shore of Tahoe (Sugar Pine Point SP is a good beginner spot as well).
I was going to suggest Yosemite as well. The traffic is much lighter during the winter. He’ll likely have the place practically to himself at times. The scenery is still beautiful in the winter as well.
