Looking for a road trip getaway? Consider heading for the far northern end of California and taking a scenic drive along the Trinity River, following a highway that connects volcano country in the east to the Pacific Coast in the west. You might want to plot your travels ahead of time because there are plenty of side trips and other distractions that will demand your attention.
You can get there by driving north up the Sacramento Valley on Interstate 5 to Redding
The Redding route is my least favorite. Second is Hwy 36 out of Red Bluff, a nice ride.
But Route Numbah One to Lassen from here would be Hwy 70 up the Feather River Canyon, hang a left onto 89 at the junction and follow 89 to the park. A really beautiful drive, with so many National Forest campgrounds there is no excure for taking too much time to look for a hotel.
Summers as a kid were spent in Plumas and Lassen counties. A great, underused neighborhood.
Redding is a good jumping off point for a lot of adventures, but it’s not a place I’d spend much time. And I agree with Bob; the I-5 corridor is sleep-inducing.
Take one of the alternate routes instead, and see some of California’s prettier neighborhoods.
