{"id":749,"date":"2004-04-19T20:53:41","date_gmt":"2004-04-19T20:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/printsthechaff\/?p=749"},"modified":"2004-04-19T20:53:41","modified_gmt":"2004-04-19T20:53:41","slug":"tim-porter-posts-at-long-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tommangan.net\/printsthechaff\/2004\/04\/tim-porter-posts-at-long-last\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Porter posts, at long last"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He&#8217;s been away for a few weeks &#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timporter.com\/firstdraft\/archives\/000296.html\">today he weighed in on why management is so crappy<\/a> at so many newspapers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have become increasingly convinced in the last few months, however &#8211; persuaded by interviews with dozens of editors, reporters and heads of journalism training organizations for a couple of projects I am involved in &#8211; that the greatest impediment news managers face to cultural change is themselves, especially middle managers, the desk editors, assignment editors and others with the most direct, day-to-day contact with the reporters and photographers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think this happens because middle managers become paralyzed by deadline pressures from our side (meaning copy\/design desks) and bullshit pressures from the glass-office types. Our nagging is bad enough, but the endemic second-guessing, micromanaging and overruling from the higher-ups make that  autopilot switch ever more enticing.<br \/>\n<P>(Mind you this could <i>never<\/i> happen at my employer, because I have <a href=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/printsthechaff\/archives\/000546.html\">vowed never to speak of my own job <\/a>on this blog).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He&#8217;s been away for a few weeks &#8230; today he weighed in on why management is so crappy at so many newspapers.
