Joe Natoli, now our former publisher at the Mercury News, was the first publisher I&#8217;ve ever been happy, maybe even proud, to work for. Sure,  he didn&#8217;t know my name &#8212; heck, it&#8217;s a big shop &#8212; but he always came by for department events like Bob Drews&#8217; legendary bratwurst days on the biz desk. He seemed smart, likeable and honest in the presence of the regular folks &#8212; earnest in a Beaver&#8217;s Big Brother kind of way. And he has a pretty good jump shot. Not to dump on all the other publishers I&#8217;ve worked for, but they always seemed distant and alooof. Not that they really were, necessarily, that&#8217;s just the image they projected to us little people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They&#8217;re getting a good guy as publisher.
