Ken, who sits next to me and is the rare desk hand old enough to have been of voting age when Ronald Reagan became governor of this state, insists his contemporaries greeted Reagan’s election with similar alarm. I’ll bow to his knowledge and experience along these lines but will not be able to shake the suspicion that some new threshold of absurdity has been crossed, and that somehow the so-called watchdogs of the press have finally become totally irrelevant.
