Good news for Philly

They’re getting a good guy as publisher. Joe Natoli, now our former publisher at the Mercury News, was the first publisher I’ve ever been happy, maybe even proud, to work for. Sure, he didn’t know my name — heck, it’s a big shop — but he always came by for department events like Bob Drews’ legendary bratwurst days on the biz desk. He seemed smart, likeable and honest in the presence of the regular folks — earnest in a Beaver’s Big Brother kind of way. And he has a pretty good jump shot. Not to dump on all the other publishers I’ve worked for, but they always seemed distant and alooof. Not that they really were, necessarily, that’s just the image they projected to us little people.
